Manage Data Collectors Through the Data Collection Dashboard

Overview

 Data Collectors are hardware agnostic data providers which allow Track & Trace to receive tag data from external sources such as an RFID readers. Track & Trace takes that raw data and through an IOT connector transforms it into insightful EPCIS events thus eliminating the need for custom middleware and reducing the integration effort.

The dashboard provides a visual representation of the data collectors that have been registered through the Data Collector API. This interface allows site managers to monitor, manage and map any connected RFID readers across the supply chain. 

This article will provide a high level overview of the Data Collector API and Data Collection dashboard.

Data Collector API

The Data Collection API serves to register/unregister, update, and query external data sources such as RFID readers, and ingest its data. It then processes the raw capture data and applies channel-specific mapping rules to transform it into EPCIS events, which can then be consumed by the Business layer to update and enrich business information.

  • Data Collector: A data collector is a physical device or software application that submits tag reads to BarTender Track & Trace. 
  • Channel: A named stream of raw tag data provided by a data collector. A single Data Collector can provide multiple Channels. 

Each channel is associated with a specific set of parameters that are mapped to the corresponding EPCIS event attributes. These parameters define the event's location, business context, item status, and event type or direction (for example, inbound, outbound, or stationary).

The Data Collector API is designed to be device agnostic and uses connectors to interface with device specific APIs. By adding new connectors, Device support will expand over time.  

Accessing the Data Collection Dashboard

  1. Click on Settings at the bottom of the navigation menu on the left.
  2. Click on Track & Trace which appears in the navigation menu. 
  3. Make sure the Data Collector tab is selected at the top.

Dashboard Layout

  1. Data Collector list: A list of all of the data collectors registered with Track & Trace. 
  2. Status overview: Overview of the state of your data collectors.
  3. Channels list: A list of channels for the selected Data connector.

Modify a Channel

Click on any of the channels and a side panel will slide in from the right. This panel allows you to modify the Channel information. 

  • Assigned Zone: The Zone where the EPC event was detected.
  • Activity: Indicates the business context within which the event has taken place.
  • Status: The status of the item that triggered the event.
