We are in a position where our IT controls the number of databases on our server, but we can add new tables to an existing database. Is it possible to create the system database (table structure) in an exsisting database?

  In the current version, yes, you can select an already-created (but empty) database.  However, that wasn't added until a later version (I think 10.0).

   

  For older versions, what you'd probably need to do is:

   

  • Install SQL Server Express 2005 on a test machine
  • Let BarTender create the database on that server
  • Export that database using SQL Server Management Studio to an SQL file
  • Give this file to your IT group and let them create it on the real SQL server
  • Point BarTender at the database created by IT on the real SQL server
