BarTender 2022 License Activation Error: Product Key Code Not Accepted Due to Version Restriction

I tried to activate the license in BarTender 2022, but received the following error message:

Cannot use the Product Key Code because the allowed version is less than the current BarTender version.

Could someone please explain the cause of this error and how to resolve it?

  It sounds like you product key is for an older version of BarTender and so you will need to install and activate that version
