Conditional printing expressions - can I make them change depending on the database connected?

I am using BarTender to print medical device labels, and I am using conditional printing to print symbols based on a field in a Access database query.  I have several queries that are identical and are used interchangeably.  My label files can switch to any of the queries and pull data from them without changing the label file.  However, the conditional print expression stays locked to the original query used when the label was made.  Is there a way for the conditional print expression to automatically change when I connect to different queries?

For example, I have 3 identical queries below.

Label_query1, Label_query2, Label_query3

The "Print when" statement for my symbol is [Label_query1.printsymbol1]="yes".  If I connect to Label_query2 using the Database Connection Setup (by choosing another query), I want the "Print when" statement to automatically change to [Label_query2.printsymbol1]="yes".  The other data on the label pulls automatically from the query I connect to.

  Hi Brian,

  Not sure if either of these would work:

  • Add a new field for each Yes/No symbol item and then Name these fields. In the conditional printing reference the Named data Sources rather than the database field
  • If you are using the Seagull Medical Devices font rather than adding on logos (#) then as the items are text objects you can use Suppression from the Transforms tab and so Do Not Print if <field> equals No for example. If some of the logos appear in the same location and you could have multiple images then adding a SPACE prefix or suffix to each one is not a bad idea to leave a gap between them.

  (# You may want to use Windows Character Map to find the image you want and then copy the result to your clipboard and paste the result in the Data Source, otherwise it is a case of trial and error to find the correct one. For example, I was on a customer's site doing this yesterday and from memory I think a comma is the Expiry Date symbol, 2 is the One Use Only and 8 was either IVD or Sterile R, so if you add a label field on with a value of these and then change the font to Medical Devices this will then change this to the egg timer like image)

  Thanks for the reply Pete.  The named data source was the trick.  I never thought of using the suppression transform; thanks for suggesting a few options.  More tricks in my bag of solutions will help down the road.
