BarTender support serialization as a built-in feature. Open the object properties, select the data source and then select the "Transformations" tab, click the "Serialization" properties button and then set the serialization criteria that you want.

I believe the below training video covers serialization:

Thanks for the information. But it didn't mention anything about serialization. So I'm still looking for help/hints.

What version of BarTender do you have? If v10 then open the properties dialog of your text object, select the data source and then select the "Transformations" tab, click the "Serialization" properties button and then set the serialization criteria that you want. In older versions you should find it by selecting the "Data Source" tab of the object properties dialog, click the "More Options" button and from that dialog that opens select the "Serialization" tab.

I'm using version 10. And I do exactly as you describe, but nothing happens when I preview the printout. If I do not remove "Sample Text" it says simply "Sample text" on all copies. But do I remove "Sample Text" it remains blank on all copies. :(

I didn't give you exact instructions, I just pointed the way...

Create text object, double click it to open its properties. Select the data source value and replace the default "Sample Text" with a number value (e.g. 10000) of some kind. Next select the "Transforms" tab for the data source, click the properties button for "Serialization" and from the dialog that opens enable serialization by ticking the "Serialize" check box; change the other settings here as needed. Clock OK when done. Now when printing, from the Print dialog specify a quantity greater than 1 for the "Serial Numbers" quantity field in order to see serialized printing in a single print job.
