    Seems like the VB app on the XP installation was using the printer driver in a pass through mode, rather than properly in a true printer driver mode.  In other words, the VB app already had the DPL code generated and embedded into the application, and it was just using the driver as a port as a means of getting it to the printer.  In the latest driver this feature can be enabled via the driver's "Page Setup" tab, click "Advanced Options", and then the "Passthrough" tab in the dialog that opens.
