Printers across VPN connected locations
I'm not sure how to search this, so here goes.
I have two locations that are network connected via a VPN tunnel and have a server at both ends. The main site is the bartender licensing server, and runs an instance of print portal. The other building has one label printer that will work with an integration so I have installed bartender enterprise there but connected it to the main site server for licensing.
Trying to understand how I should be setting up the printers and using them across my enterprise. Right now there isn't much need to use print portal to print to the remote site, but that might change. Also I developed my integration on the main server and am now deploying it to the remote server using the printer queue on the main server and thinking that doesn't help me with if the VPN connection goes down or is flakey.
What's best practice in this situation for a spotty VPN connection

Hello Benjamin,
Thank you for reaching us via the Community Forums.
The BarTender Licensing Service will authorize print jobs from BarTender clients, regardless of the location, so long as the networking requirements are met, including connection to the BarTender Licensing Service host PC's IP address over the assigned port number, which is 5160 by default. In effect, all best practices we recommend for on-site environments with multiple machines would apply here as well regarding printer setup:To ensure you have a healthy license server and printing environment, ensure the following:
- USB printers do not move locations or between computers.
- Network printers are all installed in the same manner on all computers across your network.
- Different PDF and document printers will count as different printers in your License Server (only applies to BarTender v2016 and earlier).
- Each printer has the same information for all four of these attributes:
- printer name
- printer model (driver)
- port number
- printer location
- You are up to date on the most recent revision or service release. You can find our latest releases here: Service Releases
- Set up notifications in your License Server to email you when you've exceeded your printer count.
- Set up Printer Groups in advance which will help you to set your priority based printers (only available in BarTender v2019 and later)
- If you are using a Citrix or RDP environment, please install the Seagull License Server Remote Assistant: Using BarTender with Remote Desktop Services and Citrix XenApp
Also, if the VPN goes down and the BarTender Licensing Server can't be reached, BarTender enters a grace period that allows you to continue printing for up to 72 hours from the last time that SLS was contacted. This would give us some time in order to resolve the VPN issue.
If you require more in-depth consultation services, we would recommend reaching one of our BarTender partners or our own Professional Services Department, who in exchange for a quote would be happy to assist with this.
