Print On Demand ?
Hello everybody!
Monthly we print around 10.000 labels, so far we use regular printers where we manually print different labels on A4
size paper (40 labels on 1 paper, one label = 52,5 mm x 29,7 mm), but this way is extremly slow and non efficient.
I know thermal printers can be used with software and database to automatically print labels for scanned items via the item bar code that has in the databas all the beeded information.
So it works like this: scanning item barcode-> application -> database -> printer ->label
I used to work in a company long time ago that used this system but i don't remember what software (application) they used so i am tapping in the dark.
Database has for bar codes all the needed additional information (item name, suplier, manufacturer ...) that goes on the label, so when a item bar code is scanned into the app it automatically finds the needed info for the label and sends it to a
printer for printing. User only needs to scan every intem and printing is done instantly and automatically with no additional work needed.
Is that kind of printing possible using BarTender and how?
Scanner would be a usb one that after scanning presses enter.

Essentially yes this is possible. The label format would be designed to connect to your database, and it would be designed with a "Query". This query, once populated with data, will be able to compare against your database and pull in the matching record to the appropriate fields. To achieve this I would recommend watching a few specific training videos if you haven't done so already.

This video shows you how to do the "Query", which is very important. The "Query" part of the video doesn't start until about half-way, so please watch the whole video.
Once you have the query designed, all you need to do is print/print preview, once you do this it will give you a dialog box to enter information into. The dialog box will take keyboard, or scanned data. Also if you scanner was programmable you could have it send a "CR", or "Carriage Return" after the scan so it will press the "Print" button for you.

Hi Levi,
i watched the videos and understood how to connect to database and how to make a print promt query (dialog box where i scan barcode), i have two more questions:
1) After scanning the barcode dialog box is automatically closed, where we would need it to be constantly open fow continious interupted scanning and printing, is that possible?
2) Is there a way to include a check box in the dialog box for switching between one label per scan and for an example 10 labels per one scan?

Hi there,
for 1) there is a way to have it prompt until canceled. Open your label, go to File->Print, click on the "Options" tab (located in the middle of window), check the box for "Repeat Data Entry Until Canceled".
For 2) You are able to control copies per an entry field, but there is a down side to it. The copies can be controlled on the "Data Entry Form", referring to the downside again, it has to be on a separate window; it cannot be on the same window as the Query. Also attached is a label that has the Data Entry Form designed appropriately to control the copies, by default it is set to 1 copy of a label. As a side note, if you were able to control the copies via a database field (i.e it comes from your database and no one has to hand-enter copies), this is completely do-able as well. The options to change where the copies gets it's information is under File->Print, in the middle of the window you will see "Copies", to the right of that there's a button to click, click it and it opens the window to change how it's controlled.
