Create a text object that uses a device font rather than a Windows font.  Also, in the "Print" dialog under the "Performance" tab, make sure the "Allow Serialization" tick box is checked in order for the printer's serialization feature to be used.  Lastly, note that if you click on the properties button for the number of serialized labels to print, you should be able to select an unlimited print quantity.  In the "Options" sub-tab of the "Print" dialog you can tick a checkbox to cancel a print job already running in the printer.

I got it working eventually but it has some quirks. The barcode is also a GS1-128 barcode with various AI's in it. The serialization works until you start linking the other AI bits to databases, when it stops working again. We had to take the database conncetivity off. It also only works when we tick the check box to allow the printer to form the barcode but Bartender to control the human readable.

The checkbox to cancel a print job does not issue a printer reset but only cancels the last print job, so where internal serialization doesn't work that only cancels the last job but leaves the following 249 labels or whatever in the printer. Pressing 'cancel' 249 times on the printer is fun.
