I believe BarTender 10.1 now supports what is called a "Global Counter". However, you do have to be linked to the BarTender System Database to use it.

Thanks, Guru.  I banged around on that for a couple of hours.  I did manage to set up the Bartender System Database and connect to it.  However, I'm more of an Access guy than SQL so I don't know what I need to do to get to a "Global Counter".  The tables I was able to connect to in the System Database didn't make any sense to me.

Do you have any details on how to go about this?  I am in unfamiliar territory with both Bartender and SQL.

    Thanks, IM

    Edit:

Duh. I have 10.0 as listed above.  Didn't see the 10.1 release last week.  Off to download the trial. Thanks

In BarTender's document design view, you can see the "Data Sources" Toolbox on the left side. You can here right click on "Global Data Fields" and create, manage or import a global data field which can now be shared across 2 or more BT documents. See also page 16-17 from our What's New in BT v10.1 White Paper:

I have this up and running and it works great!  Now I am trying to print a label that has a Global Data Field from another installation.  This second installation uses the computer with the System Database as the License Server.  However, when I try to print, I get Error message #3248: "And object on the template was set in the Data Source dialog to read in the global data field "Serial".  However this global data field was not found.  Proceed with an old copy of the global data field?"

How do I share the system database on my License Server with the rest of the network?  I spent several hours trying Security Center and also System Database Setup Wizard: the system database does not show up under the Remote BarTender System Servers in the Browse for Bartender System Servers.

I am using Bartender Automation 10.1.

In order to install and use a central BarTender System Database, you need to own a higher Edition of BarTender, which is the Enterprise Automation Edition. This Edition will allow you to share the Global Counter between every BarTender computer which is connecting to this central System Database.

My boss is just gonna kill me when I ask for another $500 to get this feature up and running!
