Will Print Only Automation Edition Work For Me

    Hello Mark,

When using an Automation Print-Only edition, you need to have also a full Automation license, so there is no hesitation there. What I'm trying to understand is why not only use the Automation?

If you have an Automation license for, say, 10 printers (assuming that's the total number of printers you have), then you can install BarTender and Commander on each computer on your network and they will each print to their own printers. The reporting to License Server is instantaneous and over the local network.

The Print-Only edition really has much more value when the client PCs are not in the same physical location and do not share a local network, is that the case here?

Let me know if you have any further doubts about this.

    Regards,

    Hi Adrien

Thanks for reply. Our IT department doesn't want to host a license server and the machines that will print will not be on at the same time so one of those can't host a server. To all intents and purpose they have to function as if they are disconnected from the network.

I'm puzzled by the needing to have an automation license as well as print-only automation license. We already have 6 full automation licenses (each copy hosts it's own license server) and will be buying two more that will run the same way. Are you saying that if they cannot reach a license server with an automation licenses they won't work?

    Regards

    Hello Mark,

If you already own an Automation license, then you will have no problem, the only restrictions is to own at least one Automation license for the designing part. However, please note that if you have currently Automation editions less than version 10.1, you will save the BarTender files in an older format, which will then not take full advantage of the features of the 10.1 Print-Only version that you will purchase.

Regarding your restrictions on your set-up, then it seems Print-Only licenses will be fine and you can use them coupled to your current Automation licenses. A Print-Only license also use License Server but only locally and each machine will run its own SLS.

Let me know if you have further questions.

    Regards,
