Proposal For Bartender Installation - Any Thoughts Welcome
Hi everyone, hope this has been posted in the correct sub forum.
I am looking in to replacing our current labelling solution with
BarTender Enterprise 10.
If you have a minute I wouldn’t mind your thoughts on
reading through my proposal and if you can give me any expert guidance or
recommendations that would be a great help.
The plan is for users to scan into our custom made production
system which then sends out a .CSV file to the server, which will be listening
for incoming connections on port: 5170
I am looking to install BarTender Enterprise 10 on a Windows
2003 x64 server and have about 10 Windows XP PC’s with scanners and Brother
QL-500 label printers connected locally to the PC’s via USB, then shared out to
the server.
There are 3 different label formats I plan to print, two are
the same size - 62mm x 125 and one label 62 x 180. I have set up a proof of
concept and managed to get the two 62 x 125 labels printing ok, but the 62 x180
label will not print at all.
Now I am not sure if sharing the printers out via the PC’s
to the server is the best way to go about this, especially considering the 2
different sized labels. My concern is that during testing sometimes when scanning
in to the PC, the label does not print, it seems to be a bit hit and miss and I
cannot find a reason for this.
I notice there is a Web Print server as part of the
BarTender software bundle, I haven’t looked in to this yet, but plan to do so.
Would this be of any use do you think? How about the BarTender specific print
drivers? There are none for the Brother line of printers, are they useful over
the standard Windows drivers?
The label printers are by no means set in stone, so any
recommendations for other models would be welcome.
The data that is sent to the .CSV file and picked up by the
label works well and contains the following data :
%BTW% /AF="lib://KBE1.btw" /D="%Trigger File Name%" /PRN="BrotherQL-500" /R=3 /P /DD
%END%
DA24714X,00024556-34E-US,900803613600,,20110610

Any thoughts welcome.

If I understand correctly you only have BarTender installed on your central server which, through the use of Commander, scans the specified port for the incoming data from your application (triggered by your end users).
Initially this setup should certainly work, and from the information you give I don't see anything wrong on your setup or on your trigger file.
One thing I've noticed is the use of a "D:\" drive on your task's design. Is this a mapped drive or a local drive on your server? Note that Commander (as any other Windows service) is not compatible with mapped drives as they are user dependent. If it's indeed a mapped drive, make sure to change it and use a UNC path instead (\\ComputerName\SharedResource).
If you still find inconsistencies on your printing performance, by all means do send us your BarTender documents (.btw files), your Commander task list and an example trigger file to our tech support email address for us to study. You'll find our contact details on the below webpage:

Cheers.

Thanks Fernando, the D:\ drive is an actual physical drive on the server. So I presume this should be ok to use as is currently set up.
Thanks for your input.
