It should be noted that in version 10.0 we changed some terminology due to the new features that we added like card printing and a refreshed GUI. Sub-string are now know as data sources.

Quoting from the BarTender Help system:

You may have two or more objects on the template contain the same data, but you do not want to specify the data multiple times. In these cases, you can name a data source in one object, and then share its text contents with another data source on the template. Any of the data source types (embedded data, database field, VB Script, etc.) can share data with other data sources.

    To Name a Data Source

Double-click on the object containing the data source you wish to share to open the Object Properties dialog. Alternatively, select Properties from the object's context menu.

Select the desired data source from the Navigation Pane.

Select the Data Source tab to view the Data Source property page.

Next to the Name field, click the icon to open the Change Data Source Name wizard.

In the Name field, enter the desired name by which you wish to refer to the selected data source.

Click OK to apply the name change and close the Change Data Source Name Wizard.

Once you have named a data source, it will appear in the Data Sources pane of the Toolbox.
