I also include the solution here:

We actually work with the Department of Defence (DOD) in the US quite a lot and therefore do support the UID barcoding MIL-STD-130 standards for regular barcodes, 2D barcodes and RFID.

Find attached such an example label (with RFID object which you can delete if you wish) that contains the data matrix code formatted in the manner required.

    Some background information for you:

Seagull Scientific are involved in supporting many companies who are experts on MIL-STD-130, which is apparently the US Military's mandate for tracking items with a unique, serialized identification number. In other words, the UID mandate. Our partners include ID Integration (of Mukilteo, WA) and A2B Tracking.

Recently, at the request of many of our UID partners, AIM Global (the bar code and RFID standards organization) formed a committee to push the US Government to enforce adherence to this mandate, to force the military to actually mark their equipment with UID symbologies (Datamatrix 2D codes with data formatted in a specific way).

We are members of this committee. BarTender is already being used by many of these UID committee partners, and also the US Military, for UID marking and also direct-part marking (making marks directly on metal). BarTender works well with laser etching devices that have Windows Drivers, so long as the laser etchers’ drivers work in “raster” scan mode rather than vector mode. BarTender, in its current form, works so well for UID, that we seem to have won many supporters in this space.

As far as BarTender “complying” with MIL-STD-130, we have this to say:

Important note on compliance: We can always advertise support for a given standard, or bar code type. But we do not guarantee compliance. The most we can say is “BarTender has been and continues to be part of XYZ-compliant, bar code label (or marking) processes. But we cannot guarantee compliance. Labelling process compliance with a given standard must be judged and certified by professionally licensed auditors and/or consultants with the system as a whole where BarTender is only part of the solution.”
