Mmmmm. As most of barcode printer's dots are square form (ex. 305 x 305 dpi, 203 x 203 dpi etc) that's somewhat difficult.
When you have 360 x 720 dpi printer, actually ladder direction barcode gives you some more options for X dimension - not freely, though.

Shotaro is correct, X-dimension still applies although I suppose you would call it Y-dimension. It should be noted that on some printers the dot is not entirely square, so the printed barcode in each rotation might differ very slightly in real terms.

Thanks for the information. I was unaware that the printer had to complete a full square dot before being able to turn off the head and stop printing. Now I sound pretty uninformed.

A dot on a thermal printer prints all of the dots at the same time. It is after all just a row of heated resistor elements strung out across the width of the print head. Each dot element has an on/off state, but of course you then have to consider analogue variability thanks to residual heat, media compatibility and speed of the media passing beneath all of which can give a "fluffy" appearance to the otherwise sharp edges. The X/Y-dimension of a barcode will still remain the same based on the absolute X/Y resolution of the printer.
