    1. What's the edition, version and build of BarTender in use? Check this via the "Help>About" menu item.

    2. What font are you using for the human readable?

    3. Under the "Barcode" tab click the "Print Method" button and let me know what you have selected. Normally the printer rendering the barcode and BarTender rendering the human readable is the best option.

Suggestion 3 resulted in a solution. See below. Thanks

Various. Tried Arial, Zebra Triumvirate, and Verdana. Nothing changed the results.

When I changed this to the bottom option, the one you suggested, the option to "Split UPC Digits" suddenly became available again. Strange. Is this a bug in the GX430t driver? Again, I'm using 7.2.4 for the Zebra GX430t (300 dpi) - ZPL

I assume you changed it from the option where the printer renders everything? If yes then the human readable is totally controlled by the firmware of the printer. In the ZPL barcode command a parameter is set to enable human readable. What you get is then totally up to the printer, and often that means something non too aesthetic.

With the setting you have now we produce two ZPL commands. The first for the barcode without human readable at all. The second as a ZPL text command. If you have a split between the guard bar then this might actually be two text commands. If you use a true type font then this will be rendered as graphic data. The key point though is that BarTender will decide the positioning of the text, according to your label design, rather than the printer.
