Why do I have to select a printer as the first step in designing a label?
Hi,
I'm new to the product - currently writing PQ test scripts for software validation.
It confuses me that I am forced to define a specific printer when I start designing a label, while it still seems possible to select pretty much any label stock (supplier and size) for the label format.
It seems to me that the label stock is much more important, and that as long as that is well defined, you should be able to print on any printer as long as it has the correct label stock loaded?
One of the reasons I ask, is that the label designers are located at our HQ, but the different actual printers are at a subcontractor's location - and network - so we can't directly print there.
regards
Maria

Selecting the printer you are using means that the defaults for that device will be loaded such as the maximum print width and length and give you access to the embedded fonts for that device.
If you are printing to a label printer rather than an A4 type desktop device it will probably make it easier in the long term to link the label upto a label printer that matches the print width you are using and if you use TrueType Windows fonts rather than the embedded fonts then this will make printing labels across a range of printers perform better. With older printer connections, such as serial and parallel it was usually better to use the embedded fonts as these are encoded differently to Windows fonts and so the file being sent to the printer was smaller and so was sent to the device more quickly, however with more modern devices and interfaces this is not usually an issue anymore.
The printer you select doesn't have to be the actual printer make/model that is used on the remote site but if the layout/print width fit these then that will make your job easier in the long run.

So, if I don't have the exact printer model in house any longer, how do I select it when I start designing a new label?

Just install a driver that meets the requirements, ie if you use a mix of 4 inch wide printers then install a 4 inch wide printer etc.

you need to install the appropriate driver, then it will be available for you to choose from

Thanks! Now I just need our IT suppliers to allow the install with a password...
